The Bandstand Project utilises a variety of recording techniques and equipment. This includes contact microphones and geophones connected to the metal, wood, stone, and concrete structures as well as uni- and bidirectional microphones and handheld cassette recorders placed in and around the bandstand. Hydrophones are sometimes used in wet weather or to make underwater recordings in nearby ponds, lakes, or (drinking) fountains.
Individual recordings are pieced together to create a narrative based on the bandstand’s history, location, architectural style, and acoustic properties. Samples from previous performances in the bandstand, typically taken from radio and television archives, are added to create texture and a sense of audible connection between the past and the present.
